Re: the changes in the rules of engagement and in the collective perception of AMD's stature relative to intel; AMD no longer has to be way ahead of intel in order to be dramatically catching up....it really, really, really is truly different this time...AND AMD HAS A REALLY LARGE WELL FUNDED RESEARCH BUDGET TO BOOT :)))

The perception has already changed in the enthusiast community. It has gone from "AMD can do no wrong" to "I'm waiting for Conroe". I'm certain that system builders are also very enthusiastic on Conroe but are limiting their public enthusiasm due to NDAs and killing demand for their current Pentium and Athlon 64 products. How long that will take to filter to the general public is anyone's guess.

Conroe continues to impress on performance. Woodcrest power consumption was excellent and will be even better for the lower clocked desktop lines. It appears that AMD will need to cut X2 prices by 50-75% to deliver the same value as Conroe will.

I feel that many analysts are behind the curve yet again and don't really have a good feel for the magnitude of improvement Intel will make across every category (except 4S servers) in the next year and how it may negatively impact AMD.
It looks like Intel may be getting ready for another big press event on June 6th which may lead to another AMD buying opportunity like the last set of benchmarks did a few months ago. I believe many analysts will turn negative on AMD later this year and even if AMD's sales remain relatively strong the stock will be under $20 in the next year unless AMD hits a homerun with K8L late this year or very early next year.

Hopefully that is a reverse jinx for the AMD longs.
