First of all, you're a bit flippant with your personal characterizations.. Secondly, I don't know your ethnic background or what generation you are but I have had plenty of personal experience European (mostly Eastern) people and can tell that when they arrived here they taught their children their native tongue by speaking it at home. Therefore the kids learned the mother tongue at home and English from other kids and at school. The Chinese and Japanese I knew spoke only the native language to their kids to have them hang on the culture while the kids learned English through assimilation and school. That's why you're so wrong when you say they see no need for themselves...believe me they do try themselves but for many it's damn near impossible. As the years go by they depend more and more on their kids from whom they learn passable English.... I live in an area in New York where we have about 7-8 high schools nearby. Every year at graduation time, the valedictorians and salutatorians are almost invariably Indian or Chinese...

As for flag waving, I never heard it as issue when the American Cubans parade with Cuban flags....politics there also....?? NYC has large parades every year for several ethnic groups, Irish, Polish, Italian, and Puerto Rican... plenty of flags around.
