An hour or so a day will keep you running unless you think your going to watch tv, etc. Big storm here that left us without power for a little over a week in the early nineties that is what we did. I was one of the few in the neighborhood that had a generator so we moved from house to house to get the freezers back to temp and try and get a little hot water though for the first days there was no water here in the city. Freezers will go for days if left closed and a blanket over them.
