donpat - you're confusing a number of things. SEC acts and regs largely deal with manipulation, which is typically civil in nature and not criminal. You have to realize that the most direct reason why a stock goes up is the supply and demand for shares. That is it. Once you realize that, you will be prepared to make money in the stock market. Everything else is secondary or corollary or ancillary in my opinion. Best wishes and good luck. I don't want people to lose money and they don't have to. I don't believe that it is inevitable.
