The general idea, seems to be that in the very end even that difficulties will be overcome since there won't be any oil left.

I think that long before that:

Cars would have become really small.
Nuclear power would be the only way to allow people to leave at higher latitudes
Ethanol and biodiesel would have transformed agriculture -and the flow of money- all over the planet.
