There was a medieval warm period 1000 years ago when the climate was warmer than now. During this period, Norwegian Vikings settled Iceland where the grew wheat (you can't do that there now). They also made two settlements in southern Greenland and for a short time one in northern Labrodar (which they called Vinland). During this period, grapes were cultivated and wine made in England and Poland, north of where one can do that today.

There's plenty of literature available on this.

What do you attribute the medieval warm period to?
