If I want to drive a Hummer, and I am paying for the gas etc (regardless of current price), why is it anyone elses business to even suggest I change ?

If you also bought liability insurance to cover any future damages your behavior caused, I would not object. But paying for the gas only, without liability included in the current gas price is a bit of a problem.

I live along a river with a dyke on my property. The cost for me to dig a large hole through the dyke is pretty small, I could easily afford it. Should I tell my neighbors downstream that if I dig a hole through the dyke on my property, and pay for it myself, they should mind their own business? Same problem, just one is rather more immediate, and most people would agree on the cause/effect. Burning hydrocarbons and climate change are complex enough, that those who don't like to understand science can hide from responsibility.
