WELL, no. Not very. If you buy car in another state and register it here, they can get you. But if you buy things they have no way of seeing, hey can't. There's line on the CA income tax form where they ask is you've bought things in other states and paid no or less tax than the CA tax. If you're dumb enough to answer yes, you have to itemize them and compute tax due to CA. Of course, almost everyone says no.
