I have no knowledge of Maxam's current situation but since speculation is in the air an alternative explanation for the relatively sudden large volume is that a promoter is taking control of the company. See Bill Cara's archive at tinyurl.com for a discussion of how this can work and why, if it's a 'good' promoter, it may not be a bad thing for those already invested (provided you get out in time). FWIW
