Good point X-Ray Man. Let me say for the record that
among unix systems I'm confident that Next/Rhapsody (mach kernel) is
modern and fast. Question is are the masses ready for
workstation quality and all that entails, which is certain
compromises. I think with your comments and soups link,
we can agree that for well-compiled programs making good
use of the modern os features like multihreaded etc, we
will have the power to run tough jobs better than cheap OS's.
Thats work station quality. And perhaps also for CERTAIN
mundane things, for example if you try background printing
in win95 it still hogs and slows up your machine. But under
next its truly background and you carry on without even noticiing
whats in the print queue (=proper multitasking). I dont know
why everyday tasks such as opening applications, starting up,
opening the file manager etc are slower but they generally are
on most workstations. Maybe its the graphics accelerator
cards have drivers optimised for win95 and less good drivers
written by Next. I think its a lot of things that involve
inevitable compromise between quick and nasty/ robust and careful.
The object oriented data handling has its overheads too in the
Next case. For example, I think the graphics is heavily PS
based. If you do everything in a platform-independent way then
your code will be less efficient than special shortcuts for
a given platform.

Anyhow, I guess we'll be finding out as reviews from
users come in over the next months. Thanks for the discussions.
Cheers,

Shahn
