Actually, in the past few years (since 1998) there has been a flattening not acceleration of mean yearly temperature increases in the Northern Hemisphere. So there were roughly 20 years of rapidly increasing global mean temperatures followed by 7 years of plateaued mean global temperatures. Also there is conflicting evidence about temperatures during the Medieval Warm Period - some saying that it was not so warm, some saying that it was probably warmer than today.

Of course that doesn't change the fact that the earth generally has been getting warmer.
