Bottom line, I don't believe in ethnic states. And I certainly don't believe in promoting them or subsidizing the creation of them. They are inherently racist, and normally matched by an equal level of intolerance. But they are better than constant civil war between competing ethnicities, as a last resort.
Actually, we pretty much see eye to eye on that. Historically, in the case of Israel, we did promote and subsidize their creation, and continue to do so.
Both you and Nadine still leave things too much in the camp that if it exists, and is democratic we maybe should support them. IMO, that is not being honest in that you are dodging the origins phase. Your philosophy should be applicable to all stages. The world and states keep evolving, we don't just have the same ones we have always had.
BTW, another useful example is to look at the issues in Fiji, where the native people also felt squeezed by more recent Asian immigrants. Various efforts at ethnic legislation have followed the unrest there, with more power shifting back to the natives. Time will tell how it works. |
