Turbine test for Pirelli as workers vote on pay ...............................

27 May 2006

UK

By Mark Preskett

A 45-METRE wind mast which could lead to the building of a 120-metre wind turbine at the Pirelli factory in Carlisle will be erected next month.

Company bosses in Milan have given the go-ahead to construct the mast which will determine whether it will be viable to build a £2m turbine.

The 393ft turbine would generate 20 per cent of the tyre plant’s energy, saving the firm £700,000 a year.

Industrial director Wolfgang Meier said: “Erecting the mast to measure wind speeds and directions is one of the final pieces in the jigsaw.

“If the wind speeds match data collected over the years at Carlisle Airport, then we can put forward a final working proposal to Milan.”

The mast will go up on June 8 and remain in place for a year.

If built, the turbine at the Dalston Road site would stand at 393ft – a third taller than Dixon’s Chimney in Carlisle.

Mr Meier said he hoped taking this next step would demonstrate the company’s commitment to Carlisle.

Pirelli workers are in the midst of a pay dispute and unions are balloting members about whether to accept a 2.2 per cent pay increase

The factory has set a target of having the turbine fully operational in the second half of 2007, provided all the technical data reveals that the project is viable.
