Brazil: Becoming An Energy Superpower?
May 24, 2006 19 53 GMT

Brazil will become one of the world's leading energy superpowers in the next generation thanks to its self-sufficiency in oil and future development of alternative fuels such as biodiesel and ethanol, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio "Lula" da Silva said in an interview published in French daily La Monde on May 24. Da Silva also said he hopes Brazil will also be capable of domestically sustaining its natural gas demands within the next two years. Da Silva said Brazil had launched an "energy revolution" with which few countries would be able to compete because of the size of Brazil's territory.
