I know people too who get into a steady state of drug relapse, then AA and God until the next relapse. It's a way to transfer their addictions to something else while their mind and body recovers from the last one. Usually they have groups of friends and take turns relapsing while the others hover and pray until he's back in the fold, and then one of the others takes a turn as the black sheep.
