Christine, Are you Sugar Magnolia?
You said, "It is not necessary to be a Christian to be a wonderful, compassionate, person, and most of ..."
Once, my mother [died 1984] was out walking an old lady in a wheelchair and another lady stopped to chat for a few minutes. My mother used to do a lot of things, unpaid, for interest, enjoyment, and to make the world a better place. They chatted for a while, then the passerby said, "Well, I must be off on my good Christian work". Blanche, my mother, said, "Yes, and I must carry on with my good atheist work".
The passerby stopped in astonishment. "You're not an atheist!!" "Oh yes" said my mother. "We atheists have to work very hard in this world to make it good. We don't have the afterlife in which to be good and enjoy. If it is bad here and now, that is all we get".
Not only is it unnecessary to be a Christian to be a good person. It is almost essential that one is NOT a Christian to be a good person. I hasten to add that simply dropping Christianity will not make you good. You will have to work very hard indeed. Much easier to stay a Christian and wait for the free ride to eternal happiness.
