I'm not suggesting we not do that. I do it, too, although not particularly to stave of global warming. There are a lot of reasons for doing it. If it helps the global warming problem, too, all the better.

But my point is that it's a lame answer to global warming, the catastrophe. If it really is an incipient catastrophe, then we need to get serious. And getting better gas mileage isn't likely to do it. That's little more than a feel-good. And sometimes an annoyingly sanctimonious one. The true believers present this scare scenario--and then they tell us to do what...recycle? What a joke!

It would seem to this lay person that two of the best opportunities would lie in the areas of lowered population and paying for cleaner industry in developing countries so they can skip the filthy early stages we went through. Our industry is already much, much cleaner than it used to be. Eking out a marginal improvement in our own industry will produce less bang for the buck than them skipping the dirty stages.
