I had an interesting experience recently. I went to Chicago and back from Des Moines and on return trip I stopped at a station near Joliet that had an E-85 pump. I normally run 10%-blend unleaded Premium gasohol in my cars. In this case, I was driving the '94 Ford Crown Victoria that used to be my Mom's ride since it needed a good road run to clean out its innards. I filled the tank up 1/2 way with Premium unleaded (..not gasahol..), then went to the E-85 pump and topped it off. I figure that equated to about E-40.

The Crown Vic has a 4.6 Liter overhead cam V-8 with digital, sequential port fuel-injection and a new police cruiser-equivalent dual exhaust system. The performance on the freeway ramps and on the road remained the same - perhaps a little peppier. But the mileage actually dropped a good bit since the ignition couldn't fully adjust to the E-40 blend. Refilling with standard 10% gasahol back in Iowa put the mileage right again. I usually get about 20MPG, the E-40 trimmed that to about 16MPG.

If you don't have an E-85 rated ride, I think you could run 1/4 tank of it with the balance being unleaded regular or premium. The advantage of doing so on a road trip would be to help clean your fuel injectors and to also soak up any moisture anywhere in the fuel system. But, you still may lose a couple MPG overall, unless you have your timing adjusted to do that all the time.

Or, you could spring a $1G for the XLPI kit and run E-85 all the time.

John :-)
