I was reading a good article in this weeks New Yorker (sorry, can't link it as this one isn't available on line). It says that voters consistently self-identify - Liberal - 21% Conservative - 34% Moderate - 45%
That, along with the 1/3, 1/3, 1/3 Rep/Dem/Independent split tells you a lot.
As in most sports, if you can control the middle of the court/field, you win.
The problem is the right wing media is so good at spinning populous positions as "radical" not centrist. Anit-war is anti-American, health care reform is anti-business, a balanced budget is anti-growth, an effective energy policy is "left wing, wacko, tree hugger, pot smoking hippies", pro-choice is "baby killers" (tmSteve).
The Dems really need a communicator, a Kennedy. Hillary ain't it. Maybe somebody will come out of the primaries... there are always surprises. Nobody gave Kerry a chance to get the nomination.
