Wind farm appeals in Environment Court

May 27, 2006

Two companies wanting to build the first wind farms in Hawke's Bay should know in about six weeks whether they have been given the green light.

The Environment Court has finished a week of hearing appeals against consents for the projects, which the Hastings District Council granted eight months ago.

The court considered a mountain of written and oral evidence for and against the power lines company Unison Networks, which wants to build a 15 turbine farm and Hawke's Bay Wind Farm Limited, which plans to have 75 turbines.

Those opposed say there should not be wind farms on the Maungahauru range and near the Titiokura saddle, which provide the gateway for motorists to Hawke's Bay.

But the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority says the projects are nationally significant and will provide almost 2.5% of New Zealand's current electricity consumption.
