Name one smear target who has successfully fought one off. What Rove figured out, see, was that if you can distance Bush from the smears, they work every time, and cannot be defended against. Because if you knock the opponent off message and make him deny the charges, you win, and he if he ignores the smear campaign, you win. Either way, you win. What we need is truth in advertising laws like we have on commercial products to apply to political ads. That way, the smearvets would never have been able to say anything they said in their ads, because they would not have been able to back up any of it. How many of them actually served WITH John Kerry, that is fight with him? Not a single one. In fact only about 3-4 smearvets even met Kerry in Vietnam. So right upfront they'd have to scrap their first ad.
