Stick with what got us to the top of the global heap: Democracy, balance of powers, individual liberty and rule of law, small government, low and fair tax system, avoidance of misbegotten 'foreign adventures' (as our founders referred to them), Capitalism and free markets, etc. But there will always be yet another little piss-ant Authoritarian, Mussolini wannabe coming along and claiming that they can make the trains run on time... it's the nature of the human beast to seek 'magical' solutions to age-old problems....
