Or protesting the Iraq war. The war's on. You can't change that. So you march and carry a sign. Why? Because you want to make a statement to yourself and others about where you stand. It feels good to place yourself firmly on the "right" side. Bush does not read the newspapers. He does not watch TV. For the most part he surrounds himself with people who understands what he want to hear. This is more or less true for anybody who becomes president. The power of the office just gets to them. Getting together to protest is a very powerful message that is being sent. Otherwise, people like Bush or Lyndon B Johnson wouldn't have a clue that what they are doing is unpopular. Protesting sends a powerful message. Bush still has more than two years left on his presidency. If it were not for protests in the street, nobody would ever tell him things are not going well. They could always spin away poll results by presenting polls of their own. But, they can't spin away what he see out of the window of the oval office when hundreds of thousands of people are protesting against the war. Will that change Bush's mind? Most likely not. However, it encourages others that were sitting on the fence to start speaking up. It kind of snowballs from there. Some protests of course would never catch on, but if there is substance behind the protests - it catches on. Why do you think that dictators do not allow protestors to get started?
