Our family bought a Honda Civic Hybrid 4 years ago. After state and federal tax credits, the cost was about the same as for a comparably equipped EX-model-regular hybrid. The hybrid has been a dream - great acceleration and 45 mpg average in a mountain state. Of course , Civics are not for everybody. Some people prefer a a $36,000 Ford truck with less interior leg room in the back seat and only 1/3 the "gas" mileage for more expensive diesel. (Have you ever notice all those shiny trucks, especially those with the covered backs, never carry anything.) Without the tax credits the Hybrid costs about 4-5 thousand more than a regular car. For some, that's important, because those dollars are needed for performance engines and extra trim packages. Let's let the consumer decide this one. I'm all for $5 gas.
