Kerry never criticized the troops in Vietnam, on the contrary. He was representing the troops, or at least half of them. And he was merely telling congress what the troops wanted him to say. And this was mainly the result of the CIA's Phnoenix Program which used SpecOp guys to basically murder some 20,000 Vitnamese, some of them by beheading, and those troops had finally rebeled against the insanity of it all. Also at issue were free-fire zones, the burning down of hootches, Agent Orange, carpet bombing and napalm, all atrocious kind of stuff, especially when used against a small rural country.

The best thing for the troops in 1971 was to end the war ASAP.
Same as right now in Iraq. You are no longer a patriot if you want to continue the Iraq War. You are a patriot if you want to help bring the troops home.
