Thanks for your thoughtful response. I agree with you in virtually everything you say. Some people in the telecom industry are forward thinking and are pushing for all-optical networks. One of them is Peter Cochrane, Head of Core Technologies Research at British Telecom. His article, "Dark Fibre Will Transform Telecommunications," is at:

BTW, I live in Japan, and the pace of change here is not any faster than the U.S., I assure you. The biggest reason is because there are no choices to speak of. NTT is the only game in town, and sometimes I feel like it could take decades before I have reasonable access to the world wide network.
