I would have loved to make that trip with you. When I was a boy on a trip to Florida we saw only a few small alligators. That was when you could buy a real stuffed alligator at any tourist shop. Seeing many live ones would be a treat.

Wild critters are fine in their own place. Is Big Cypress Swamp for alligators? If so, it's great to have them, and nice to know that you have to be on the lookout ALL THE TIME.

Reader's Digest had a story some time back about cougars attacking and killing people in Colorado. This is a rare occurrence, and if the whole truth were known we would find that more people are killed in collisions with deer on the highway than by cougars. More cougars equals fewer deer, and fewer collisions.

Same thing with bears and wolves. We are making strides in bringing their populations back from extinction. People are rarely killed by either bears or wolves, BUT IT DOES HAPPEN.

We need to learn to coexist with wild critters in their habitat by keeping our eyes open and not leaving temptation out for them.

In OUR habitat, it's a whole different story, in my opinion. You can't have a den of skunks under your porch. You can't have bears in your garbage can. You can't have cougars on your jogging trails. You can't have alligators in your swimming pool. If we keep expanding out into wild habitat, there's going to be trouble.
