On the issue of whether the public is sufficiently alarmed by the prospects of global warming, I still think Gore had it about right. So long as national political campaigns can either ignore it or use the mantra that the "science is unclear" or "there is no consensus", then the mix of news about dangers and solutions needs to be heavy on the news side. As the political culture shifts, then the mix becomes more "even handed", as I think he said.

The structural interests that oppose any serious work on global warming are both too wealthy and too ensconced in the power centers to permit anything serious to happen without genuine alarm. The sort that simply doesn't exist today.
