The message was that the carrier group was returning home after accomplishing its mission of six months duty in the Gulf. Nothing more.

It became fortuitous for the republicans when the press flagged the banner. The democrats , who were losing much ground at the time, needed to change the subject. They began, by spinning the banner into a continued loos of life in Iraq.

There was no 'mission accomplished - stay on message' being touted by the GOP at that time. The message was that we will defeat the terrorists, it will be a long battle and Iraq will ultimately benefit from our presence.

Yes, this was a classic example of the democrats and MSM scripting a topic to pitch their slant on the issue.
