If one goes back in time, you'll find "the bulk of scientists" once said immigrants from southern and eastern Europe were a "racial threat" to the US. They also were big supporters of eugenics efforts to improve the race about that time. They were as certain they understood the real world as you are.

The hallmark of science is that it changes with new data and improved theories. The hallmark of ideology is that it clings to a fixed belief, despite new data and improved theories.

If you read up on the history of CO2 and global warming, starting back about 100 years, you will find that up until sometime in the 1970's most scientists dismissed the notion, as they held to a belief that somehow the earth had a stable temperature, with perturbation of various durations, which would return to this "norm". There were many breakthroughs in understanding many different aspects of CO2 and atmospheric dynamics prior to the current scientific agreement on CO2 and global warming.
