since that would imply primative organisms could 'express' as much or in some cases MORE traits than higher organisms or humans since they have as many genes?? Maybe I don't understand what you mean by a primitive organism. All life on this planet is a result of 4 billion years of reproduction and so a tree is as "advanced" as a human geneticly. Simpler organisms have much fewer genes than do the complex ones. Sometimes simpler is considered more primitive since they more closely resemble the organisms of the distant past, but each organism on this plant is a product of the same 4 billion year timespan. Some examples: virus - 1-25 genes Bacteria - 500-6000 genes Bee - 15000 genes Worm - 19000 genes Mammal - 25000 genes Tree - 50000 genes Sure enough, Many trees have a much more complex life cycle than do people. They change with the seasons, issue chemical messages, attract pollinators and seed dispersers, and withstand a wide variety of conditions (since they can't move away from the changes). we do not gain our undoubted completxity over worms Humans do have about 1/3 more genes than worms. The Bacteria have pretty much all the genes necessary for a complex life, once you start adding to that you are adding features. As analogy think of a cake. Most of the basic ingredients go to make the cake and that is what fills you when you eat, but hundreds of additional steps could go to decorating the frosting. TP
