You would have LOVED to be in the little town where I was on Memorial Day. Beautiful little town, totally immaculate, houses painted, lawns manicured, flowers of spring, and American Flags EVERYWHERE! The main street, about 1 1/2 miles long, had American Flags about every 12-15 feet....! both sides of the street.
I was there for a reunion of a large family group, that I have researched for ancestors and descendants for many years. There were 80 some of the "cousins" from all over the US there!! At least 3 generations of several families! The Museum there had a BIG Supper that evening, and 110 seats were all they could hold, and they were sold out several weeks before the event.
The Memorial Day event at the Cemetery where their NW Settlers, Military and townspeople are buried. (Settlers as early as the 1860's, and mine was known as the Mother of Lynden....have an original letter from her dated 1872 from there....) All graves in the well cared for cemetery had a small Flag on it, put there by the Boy Scouts at 6 AM that morning, in the rain. At least one flower decorated each grave there.
There were Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts for the Honor Guard, Military Honor Guard, LOTS of Vets, a plaque unveiled to the POW's of all ways, met the Mayor and his wife, the Cousins, and MANY, MANY townspeople, including children. The ceremony concluded with a 21 gun salute and Taps.
America in the Red Areas of the country is alive and well, and does honor the Military as well as the ancestors. It was a truly inspiring day, and I am so honored that I was invited to participate. It was AWESOME! |
