I don't think we want to participate in sanitized discussions, do we?

This is not to say that one can't be polite.

Since I'm always embroiled in litigation, I'm used to adversarial communications--with somewhat irrational opponents--so nothing much bothers me. I just want people to be honest about what they're saying and not to shift their
positions in medias res as though I should have known what they meant all along....lol

As for the speech, the discussion first concerned the
"Mission Accomplished" banner versus the text of the speech.
Now I could be wrong, but I don't recall people at large
believing that the troops were returning home shortly after that press conference. Had people believed the "mission was
accomplished" wouldn't they have been expecting a return in
very short order? Maybe not.

Of course, don't we still have peacekeeper forces all over the place, some of whom were installed during the Clinton era?
It seems unlikely that anyone could have thought back in 2003
that we'd be out of Iraq in a month or two. BWDIK.
