You're right that the technological ability to measure the strength of hurricanes has improved quite a bit over the years.

100 years ago they could look at barometric pressure in a barometer.

One thing that interests me is that Columbus was able to predict a hurricane that hit Hispanola in 1502. I'd love to know how he did that. The mercury barometer was invented by Torricelli, a pupil of Galileo, in 1643.

I can predict whether a hurricane is coming by looking at clouds but that's not all that reliable. Probably could give you 12 hour warning to get the hell out.
