It's quite a bit more than that. Single socket motherboards are about $250 less than dual socket boards. They aren't in the EATX format which means you don't spend an extra $150 having an exotic case shipped to you and it's easy to fit where a regular PC will fit.

Is Conroe dual socket capable? If not- then it pushes the high performance market towards a solution that Intel cannot even enable.

They are not going to push a woodcrest + FBDIMM against a DDR2 2S FX solution in (as you point out) a standard ATX motherboard- hopefully in nominally higher cost motherboard.

That should completely take the wind out of Conroe sails with the gamers/top/hign end performers.

Couple that with the suspicion that the 4MB cache (and performance) takes a nose dive on multi threaded apps- Conroe will get crushed in a 3,4,5+ thread application.
