World on Fire : How Exporting Free Market Democracy Breeds Ethnic Hatred and Global Instability. That's odd, I was just commenting on this idea on PfP, although my take is different. Message 22504702 I agree that democracy can release violence and ethnic hatred that authoritarianism kept under control. I would argue that this happened in the US after Jacksonian Democracy enfranchised poor white men, releasing violence and ethnic hatred against Native Americans and leading to the various nativist movements. This doesn't mean that democracy is a bad thing. The ethnic hatreds and propensity to violence were already there.
