Adam Smith had some commentary on this topic, as well. That doesn't mean capitalism is bad, just that it's not all roses and rainbows. Similarly democracy. Anybody who thinks democracy is all roses and rainbows never studied history. But as Churchill said, democracy is the worst form of government -- except for all the others that have been tried. The idea I am toying with is that ethnic violence is an inevitable result of shifting to democracy from authoritarianism in a multi-ethnic state, and that institutions should be put in place to prevent this in advance. The US military attempts to serve that function in Iraq but they really aren't designed to do that.
