UPDATE 1-Semiconductor sales up 8.1 percent on year in April

SAN FRANCISCO, June 1 (Reuters) - Worldwide microchip sales rose 8.1 percent in April from a year ago, boosted by demand for cell phones and devices such as digital music players, an industry group said on Thursday.

April sales were $18.1 billion, marking a 0.4 percent decline from the previous month due to intense competition in the microprocessor market, the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) said in a monthly report.

"The overall market growth rate continues to run slightly ahead of the SIA forecast issued last November, which projected growth of 7.9 percent," SIA President George Scalise said.

The association said microchip sales got a boost from growing demand for NOR flash memory and digital signal processors -- used in cell phones -- and wireless handsets containing analog products.

Sales of microprocessors, which represent 14 percent of total chip sales and the largest sector of the market, were up nominally over the year on demand for personal computers, the SIA said. (Additional reporting by Michael Flaherty)
