You're correct that JFK was very unpopular on the eve of his assassination. In the intervening yrs, History has proven JFK's courageous Cuban blockade was the crucial turning point of the cold war. Compare his foreign policies, etc to more recent Repub presidents and you'll recognize that JFK would be a Repub politician in today's world. He and Truman would agree with Reagan's reply when he was accused of deserting the Democrat Party. Reagan said "I didn't leave the Democrats, the Democrats deserted me." Even FDR would be a Republican today, although none of these former politicians would agree with the current batch of senate Repubs on illegal immigration.

Today's Repub party appears to be branching into two future political parties in the USA-- "Moderate Repub Party" vs the greedy "Capitalizer Repub Party". Don't know if the Dem Party will simply fade away or remain a 3rd party.
