You think that before Darwin no one knew "life continues only through reproduction"

Until Louis Pasteur's experiments following Darwin's work, it was generally thought that food spoilage was caused by the spontaneous generation of new life in the food. Pasteur showed that if the germs were killed and and the food sealed against any new lifeforms it would remain sterile. This was important scientificly not only to keep the scientists milk from souring, but as another proof of a prediction of Darwin's theory.
