I thought it was well understood that:

1. Viruses survive longer in cold and humid conditions and are rapidly destroyed by sunlight and in dry outdoor air.

2. People tend to be crowded together more in winter than in summer, spending less time in a sunny outdoors, and therefore viruses spread more efficiently from coughing, sneezing, and touching.

Bubonic plague, on the other hand, is spread by fleas, which proliferate rapidly in hot weather, infecting human beings as well as rodents that carry them.
