History tells us that when a group takes power using the military it's in a time of great crisis, not in a time of relative peace.

The leader tells the people that they need a strong man, someone who can lead, someone who can make decisions, and the followers follow him.

You say you have allegiance to the Constitution but I've seen over and over again that most people have no idea what the Constitution says and don't approve of much of what it does say.

As an example, look at how much power Lincoln took during the Civil War. I love Lincoln but it's well accepted that many of his acts were contrary to the spirit and the law of the Constitution.

For example, he had no legal right to free the slaves. I am glad he freed the slaves, it was a good thing, but ultra vires (he exceeded his powers).
