The average house uses 3-5 kW in steady state mode.

For any PV technology, the retail installed system cost is up towards 8-10 $/W so if you want to go off the grid your cost will be in the 24-50 k$ for basic power while the sun shines plus additional costs for energy storage which might be as high as 3x more depending on location.

Most solar installations are in locations where connecting to the grid does not make sense due to connection costs or are intended to peak shave at a lower level to pay off installation costs in 10 or 15 years.

Now, if one is a treehugger that wants to live off the grid for political/moral reasons, the installed cost can be much lower due to extreme limitations in the use of modern conveniences. A 250W water pump and another kW of household stuff is feasible in the boonies.
