Yes, Kerry volunteered for combat. That's the opposite of trying to avoid the draft. But I don't deny that while at Yale he waited to finish his studies before enlisting. Then he had the choice to do what GW did and evade the war, or enlist and volunteer. He did the latter.

Kerry would have easily evaded the draft with his powerful connections. Though not rich like Bush, he had rich and powerful friends. In those days that's all it took to evade. Almost no rich kids were drafted.
