I think every war/conflict has atrocities, Dale. There is certainly more scope for them in a long war, or an occupation, but rapes, murders, torture, taking body part souvenirs- I think it's all very likely to happen in any conflict. Part of it comes from the need to dehumanize the person you are going to kill. I think it would be impossible for a lot of people to fight, if they didn't (to some extent) imagine the enemy as less than human. When you do that I think the stage is set for incidents like Haditha, or Abu Ghraib.
