Some people have religious objections to saying the Pledge, even before "under God" was added.

Jehovah's Witnesses, for one.

Doesn't mean they don't love America.

I used to have a philosophical objection to saying the Pledge during the Civil Rights era.

Where I lived, there wasn't justice for black people. Our principal flew a Confederate flag on the flagpole above the American flag, to symbolize his antipathy to integration.

I used to remain standing during the pledge but not say it when I went to that school, and if anybody asked me why, I'd tell them.

I never got into any serious trouble. My teachers liked me. Kids used to tell me, in private, that they admired me for saying what I thought.

I love America. Even say the pledge, now.

One of the things I love about America is tolerance for dissent.
