I don't think it is a misinterpreation, at least not in its basic message. I'm less concerned about the exact words, than I am in getting the overall meaning correct. The only evidence I have of the overall meaning being incorrect is your assertion.

How many times did gaddafi call for the destruction of America, Israel and just about anyone who looked sideways at him. But guess who he's buddies with now? And who's buddies with him?

Buddies? I wouldn't call the US and Qaddafi buddies. At best no longer enemies. And notice the difference with Iraq. Qaddafi gave up his nuclear program. Iran did not.
