Gib, as the welfarists will tell you, poverty is relative. Yes, compared with life 100 years ago, it is vastly wealthier, but compared with life in most other countries, NZ has lost ground from way up there in GDP per capita stakes to somewhere down below all sorts of countries.

Not to mention murder, violence and robbery statistics [which make the old movie West Side Story look tame by comparison].

Perhaps you move in illustrious circles of wealth and don't see life in the bottom decile.
