"What then happens to the rights and responsibilities of "next of kin"?
There are many rules for inheritence, medical care, guardianship, and citizenship that are tied to a legal definition of marriage."

I thought I covered that...

"...anyone who wants to can form a contractual legal commitment and call their relationship whatever they want but 'marriage' is not a legal term, which is what is really being argued.",

As a legal term it is available to some adult relationships to establish legal rights, responsibilities and rules, but not others. So eliminate it as a legal term. Then relationships all revert to the rights and responsibilities of a contractual legal commitment. The insistance of labeling it a 'marriage' under law is a baited trap that has no meaning outside of your little love nest of leftwing/rightwing banter.

You can still have a 'sister in law' or 'Mother in law' or what ever once the contractual terms are set. This is no different that what has been proposed as a 'Civil Union' except that nobody gets to be called 'legally married'. The complaint, if it is legitimate, is that heterosexuals get to use the term 'marriage' as a 'legal' term with its rights, responsibilities and rules, but gays can't.

Under this proposal anyone who wants to use the term 'Marriage' is free to use it, but it has no legal qualifier.
