Our ancestors where extremely poor

They were extremely poor, and capitalism was very undeveloped. Something that we would recognize as markets did not truly emerge until the 14th century.

The majority of Europe was a subsistence economy well into the 17th century. $6 a year of income? That's probably about right. Europe lived hand to mouth, literally, until the Industrial Revolution moved the masses into the cities as industrial wage laborers.
